"These are challenging times.  It is easy to feel anxious and overwhelmed during periods of uncertainty.  When things feel like they are spinning out of control, it is important to hold to the center; to remember the strength and resiliency of our people, our friends, our families and ourselves.  Wherever you are, whatever struggles you may be going through, we wish you peace and strength along this part of the journey."

Our institute has been providing outpatient hyperbaric oxygen therapy in Orange County for 20 years.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves breathing 100% pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber.  Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a well-established treatment for decompression sickness, a hazard of scuba diving.  Many of you may not know that there are other conditions which may benefit from hyperbaric oxygen therapy.  Such medical conditions include serious infections, bubbles of air in your blood vessels, and wounds that won't heal as a result of diabetes or radiation injury.

Air pressure in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber may be increased to three to four times higher than the 21% oxygen concentration found at sea level.  Under these conditions, your lungs can extract more oxygen than is possible from breathing pure oxygen at sea level.  Your blood carries this oxygen throughout your body to help fight bacteria and to stimulate the release of growth factors and stem cells to promote more rapid healing.

Why HBOT is done

Healthy tissues in your body need an adequate supply of oxygen to function properly and to maintain homeostasis.  Injured tissues require even more oxygen to survive.  Hyperbaric oxygen therapy increases the amount of oxygen your blood can carry by dissolving more oxygen in your plasma.  The resulting increase in blood oxygen temporarily augments tissue function to promote healing and to fight infection.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is used to treat several medical conditions.  Your doctor may suggest hyperbaric oxygen therapy if you have one of the conditions listed below.  Medicare and many insurance companies may cover hyperbaric oxygen therapy for these conditions.

  • Anemia, severe

  • Brain abscess

  • Bubbles of air in your blood vessels (arterial gas embolism)

  • Burns

  • Decompression sickness

  • Carbon monoxide poisoning

  • Crush injuries

  • Deafness, sudden

  • Gangrene

  • Infection of skin or bone that causes tissue death; osteonecrosis; osteomyelitis

  • Nonhealing wounds, such as diabetic foot ulcers, that failed 30 days of traditional wound therapy

  • Radiation injury or radionecrosis

  • Skin graft or skin flap at risk of tissue death

  • Vision loss, sudden and painless
